Looking for an offbeat guide to North Texas? Look no further, friends-Tui Snider has it covered in her new book, "Unexpected Texas".
You know those people you meet and immediately like? Tui's one of those. I was instantly drawn to her signature red beret and sense of humor.
Some of the quirkier chapters include details on how to visit the:
- Gravesite of an alleged space alien.
- Courthouse displaying an embalmed lizard in a velvet-lined casket.
- Statue of Jesus wearing cowboy boots.
- Museum commemorating the lynching of Santa Claus.
- Life-sized wax replica of DaVinci's Last Supper.
- Building made entirely of salt.
- ...and more!
Here's a snippet from the introduction to give you a peek at Tui's humorous style:
The state of Texas and I got off on the wrong foot. It wasn't the stark prairielands that depressed me; it was the human side of the landscape. On that first drive home from DFW Airport in the fall of 2009, the endless procession of strip malls, donut shops, "breastaurants" (a la Hooters), and churches lining the highway gave me the impression that all Texas did was eat junk food, leer at women, then repent on Sunday.
I must also confess to a hefty chunk of Yankee prejudice. Part of me thought I had Texas figured out, you know: big hair and BBQ, pick-up trucks and country music. Was I ever wrong! Sure, Texas is all those things, but what I did not realize then, and what this book intends to show, is that Texas is much more than all the news headlines and cliches would suggest.
