All right----I chose an easy first project for the Summer of Awesomeness. I decided to paint a rug since I wanted a new welcome mat.
I really liked this one from Jennifer Perkins. Her tutorial covers everything you'd need to know. Her blog rocks---Naughty Secretary Club.
I made my own tutorial, also. The rug cost me about $3.00 to make. That's much cheaper than any rugs I've seen for sale, and it's personalized.

$1.88 boring rug from Walmart
-
fabric paint and a brush...I could only find puffy paint, but I recommend a regular, non-puffy kind, or even plain old acrylic craft paint

a print out of numbers or letters on card stock
a circular plastic lid as a pattern for my circles
1. My address is 7263, so I wanted 4 circles. I made chalk line (you can't see it in this photo) to divide the rug half on the top and bottom. It made a big cross shape. I used that as a guide to center my circles. I just eyeballed the distance between them. I used chalk and washable marker to draw the outline of the lid.
2. I cut out the letters and centered them in the circles. Draw around them with a marker.
3. Now you just paint around the marker lines where the numbers are. Voila! New rug.
4. Let it dry 24 hours, then pop in on your porch, or just inside your door.
I made an extra one for my studio. I just free-handed it. If you're not an artsy person, just print out a pattern on card stock, cut it out, then trace around it.
Wow, those came out really great! I'm going to copy this idea for our new home in Oregon :) And you're right, welcome mats can get soooo expensive!

You could paint a little bird for each of your chickadees.
Polka dots would be easy and nice, too, I think.....
do the numbers in big circles, then do smaller, different colored and sized dots
around the rest of the rug.
