Hi there! I'm Laura Irrgang. I paint, I illustrate, I write, and I make lots and lots of stuff. I live in Texas and work from my studio at the edge of the woods overlooking a big meadow.
I have a degree in fine art and theater from Tarleton State University. My life has been filled with a variety of fun adventures...making holiday toys and decorations, painting pet portraits, teaching art at a children's museum, designing costumes, singing in a jazz band, choreographing musicals, and handling art publicity. As much as I love sequins and heels, I could spend almost all day out in the woods hiking and observing nature. But the urge to bedazzle the squirrels is strong.
My hobbies keep multiplying. I play a lot of instruments, but my favorites are harp, flute, Irish penny whistle, and singing. My husband and I recently took a circus class in aerial silks, double trapeze, and my favorite-lyra hoop. So now, of course I want to run away and join Cirque du Soleil. Knitting is soothing, and I'm learning to spin yarn, too. I hope to be able to make yarn out of some fur I saved from my cat before he died. That's not as gross as it sounds.
People usually like looking at my collection of weird things in jars...like umbilical cords, a deceased hummingbird and a bat, and dirt from every place I've ever visited. I'm a total clothes horse and shoe hoarder. Other obsessions include Halloween, Mexican folk art/Day of the Dead, and life in the 1950s. I also love gardening, mermaids, sewing, photography, mythology, making chocolates, and old buttons.
I spend most of my free time with my two little girls and my husband. I know most people love their family, but I'm crazy about mine!
In another life, I probably would have been a costume and set designer, an opera diva, a park ranger, or a composer. Maybe a ballerina or a marine biologist. For now, I'm content to make art and spend my days dreaming up magic and mischief.
